Spot Notches 1,500 Rescues Initiated with Their Technology

E-mail

SpotSpot, a leader in emergency notification technologies, has announced their devices have initiated more than 1,500 emergency rescues worldwide. The announcement occurred in conjunction with the four year anniversary of the Spot Personal Tracker, the world's first satellite messenger product.

Spot can allow users to check-in and share their locations with contacts back home. In case of emergency, contacts will know the user's location or the user can send an SOS message with their location to the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center. The center then verifies the incident and notifies the proper authorities. Spot uses satellite technology, allowing it to work-off-the-grid and increasing its functionality.

The 1,500-plus rescues have taken place in 105 countries with 55 percent in the U.S. and 22 percent in Canada. Within the U.S., California, Colorado, Utah, Alaska and Florida are the states with the highest number of Spot SOS activations.

In 2011, rescue officials responded to 546 SpoT-initiated requests of which 402 were land-based, 117 were at sea and 27 were aviation related.

Besides facilitating rescues Spot helps prevent unnecessary search and rescue missions by allowing the user inform others that they are okay. Outdoor preparedness such as proper gear, sustenance and research also go a long way in preventing situations where a Spot SOS is necessary.
