REI has announced plans to open new stores in Cincinnati, OH and Medford, OR as well as plans to relocate its current location in Cary, NC. The REI in Cincinnati, slated to open next fall is the co-op’s first location in Ohio. It will be located at Rookwood Commons, with a nearly 22,000 square-foot, one-story building. REI claims they have 5,000 active members in the area.
In Oregon, the one-story Medford location is just under 24,000 square feet. Both of these locations will have bike, ski and snowboard shop services, as well as a seasonal gear rental. Relocating the current store in Cary, NC will increase the store’s size from 21,000 square feet to 27,200 square feet. With the additional size REI will increase its offerings in cycling, footwear and paddling. The original store opened in 1992.
The other North Carolina stores are in Durham, Greens- boro and Raleigh. After opening eight new stores in 2011, REI now operates a total of 122 in 29 states. The announcement of these two new stores will join three other 2012 store openings in Indianapolis, IN, Oxnard, CA and Woodbridge, VA.
