Electronics Causing More Harm Than Good In Parks

E-mail

The New York Times reported that national parks like Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Grand Teton have seen an increase in technology abuse and misuse, leading to injuries and wasted resources.

This summer, a woman at a national park aggravated a buffalo with a video camera, and as a result was charged by the animal. A young teenager fell off the Grand Canyon and was seriously injured because he was backing up to take a photo.

The most common problem seems to be the abuse of personal satellite messaging devices that send out emergency signals. Rangers in helicopters are flown out to assist distress signals, but often there is no real emergency. National Park rangers feel that if there was a two way device other than cell phones, the parks would save a lot of money on helicopter use by assessing the severity of the situation before dispatching.
