The Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act offers a 10 percent tax credit for companies whose payroll salaries increased in 2012 compared to 2011. The bill's maximum amount for that credit is $5 million. The Marketplace Fairness Act, or the “Internet tax” bill, is an amendment to the act that may pass in the U.S. Senate.
The bill would help streamline the collection of sales tax from Internet sales by individual states. In most states, online retailers are required to either collect sales tax or notify their customers of their liability due under a use tax, but many do not. The proposed legislation is not a new tax for the 45 states that currently collect tax on retail sales; it would merely provide a unified process for them to collect sales tax from online retailers selling into their states.
