Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is in Utah working to resolve conflict over federal-owned canyonlands and wilderness. As part of President Obama's Great Outdoor initiative, Salazar has been discussing the preservation and development of these lands, both with officials and businesses at Outdoor Retailer, hoping to find solutions to please both conservationists and gas and oil developers.
Salazar recently found a compromise for a 626-well project in Green River’s Desolation Canyon. Using new technology, drilling can be done under wild areas instead of on top of them, with wells snaking laterally from a well pad for almost a mile. Salazar is also working with Nancy Sutley, the chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, to bring more change and gather ideas for this conservation campaign.
