Musician Ben Sollee will be launching his Ditch the Van Tour 2010 in San Diego on August 18. Sollee has combined four regional tours into one transcontinental itinerary where he will be performing and reaching out to local cycling groups. He hopes to help improve cycling in America by working with the Adventure Cycling Association on the emerging U.S. Bicycle Route System and the League of American Bicyclists’ Bicycle Friendly America Program.
The tour is also a reaction to the huge carbon footprint typically left when artists travel to perform. Sollee can still load all of his gear, luggage, merchandise, and camera equipment on utility and touring bikes, without the help of a tour bus.
The tour will start out in southern California, move up the coastline and then reach Denver, CO by train for the Tour de Fat in Fort Collins. From Colorado, a three day drive will take Sollee to Maryland, then Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. The tour will end up in Kentucky where Sollee will speak at the tenth annual Idea Festival on “Beautiful Limitations: Bicycles, Music, and Community Based Touring.”
