This October 21-23 the first annual Roanoke Outdoor Circus, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, will take place in Virginia. It is an outdoor sports festival created to serve as a gateway event to encourage healthy, active outdoor recreation.
The Circus features an array of outdoor activities, including running, climbing, biking, slacklining, paddling, discgolf, hikes, and more. Both the popular MountainFilm Festival and Sustainable Living Roadshow will make stops at the event, Gibbon slacklines will host a professional competition and Jeff Lenosky will put on a professional bike trails demo.
A highlight of the Outdoor Circus includes the Gear Junkie Treasure Hunt on Oct. 23 that gives participants a chance to win their share of $40,000 in outdoor gear. Additional activities include a geocache trail, gear yardsale, guided hikes along the Appalachian Trail, beer tasting and even mechanical bull rides, and it will also feature booths and displays to promote and sell outdoor gear and activities.
Roanoke has been working hard over the past few years to promote the region's ample outdoor amenities and potential to become a major outdoor industry center, and this festival is a chance to welcome the outdoor industry to its backyard. Companies are invited to send their regional reps, send athletes or provide a demo, as an opportunity to show off gear and connect with new users.
