The North Face has announced they will be sponsoring endurance athlete Diane Van Deren's attempt to bring attention to North Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail by setting the record time for running the trail. Van Deren will need to average 38 miles per day to complete the nearly 1,000 miles of trail in 24 days.
The runner will also be supported by specialty outdoor retailer, Great Outdoor Provision Co., as she traverses the Blue Ridge mountains, Mt. Mitchell, all the way to the finish at Jockey's Ridge State Park on June 2. Finishing on June 2 will coincide with Great Outdoor Provision Co.'s “Land Trust Day” to bring attention to the trail.
The Mountains to Sea Trail is attractive because it provides simple day hikes or multi-day wilderness experiences for backpackers. For Van Deren the trail represents a number of obstacles from high peaks to swamps to sand.
