The North Face has awarded the second round of Explore Fund grants for 2011. By the numbers this cycle, The North Face granted over $125,000 to 51 projects reaching more than 30,000 children across the nation. Since the Explore Fund began in 2010 the program has provided more than half a million dollars in grants to organizations that get youth outdoors.
A major focus of this grant cycle was getting low-income and urban youth outdoors. This goal was evident in the allocation of funds; 60 percent of grants, a total of $77,000, was awarded to outdoor organizations with a focus on increasing diversity.
Among the recipients was Girls on Ice, a program designed to help teenage girls gain confidence in their own intellectual and critical thinking skills, technical mountaineering and wilderness skills, and leadership skills over 11 days exploring glaciers and alpine landscapes.
Ann Krcik, director of Outdoor Exploration at The North Face sees the value of the Explore Fund in promoting programs that foster an appreciation for wild places and instill conservation in future generations.
The overall breakdown of grants is as follows:
$70,000 Access to front and back country recreation
$37,000 Connection to nature that will empower the future leaders of tomorrow
$18,000 Education for personal and environmental health
